Continue west and bypass next change to cross over the I-40. At the next stop sign (road ahead dead-ends), cross I-40 and continue west to Clinton.

Right at the yield sign onto Gary Blvd. Left onto 10th St. Follow 10th St. south until I-40. Right at the Y-intersection out of town. Ignore 2 chances to cross I-40 and cross to the north side (under the I-40).
Foss
Continue straight at the intersection with SR44. Cross to the south side at the next opportunity then cross to the north side at the next opportunity. Cross to the south side at the next opportunity (again!).
Canute
Right at the 4-way stop in town. Right again at the crossroad 1 mile west and pass under the I-40. Turn left to continue west.
Elk City
Entering Elk City, left then right onto SR34i (BL-40). Follow BL-40 left onto Van Buren and follow BL-40 into 3rd St. (Ignore SR6). Past the junction with SR34, right onto the 2-lane and continue west. At the T-intersection, cross I-40 to the south side and cross I-40 at the next opportunity to the north side. Use the north service road toward Sayre.

Right at the stop sign then left onto 4th St. (US-283) and pass through town. Cross the river, then right onto the 2-lane just before the I-40 overpass.

In the late 1920's, Route 66 zig-zagged south from Conway using dirt roads till Washburn, from there it followed present day US-287 and 10th St. into Amarillo.
Palo Duro Canyon is south of Route 66 :
Palo Duro Canyon is well worth the trip if you have the time. A spectacular canyon with horseback riding, hiking trails, and a musical performance in an outdoor setting every evening in the summer ("Texas"- you should call (806) 655-2181 for reservations).

From Amarillo to Glenrio
From south 6 th. St., just past Belleview, turn left onto Bushland (=southwest) just past Western, turn right onto 9th St. (=west) pass underneath Amarillo Blvd. Turn left at BR-40 and follow BR-40 past the city limit. At the S-curve, turn right onto Indian Hill Rd. (=west). At the T-intersection, turn left and cross the railroad.
The Cadillac ranch is on the southern side of I-40, easy access: cross under I-40, turn left (=east) just after the bridge, continue next to I-40, the Cadillac ranch will be on your right, in a field. There is a small parking spot, and an opening in the gate. It is located near exit 62 of I-40. After your visit, return to the northern service road.
Turn right onto the service road (north of I-40) and continue on the northern service road.

Vega

From Glenrio(TX) to Santa Rosa
If coming from Glenrio, the old road can be driven all the way to Saint Jo (passing Endee), if road conditions permit it. If not, follow I-40, use exit 369 (Endee) and turn right at the stop and turn left onto the north frontage road. At Bard (exit 361), large vehicles ought to take I-40 till exit 356, otherwise, stay with the northern frontage road as it passes a tunnel under I-40 then take the south frontage road
Saint Jo
Follow southern frontage road (the southern Frontage road is the second road counting from the I-40).
Tucumcari
At the east end of the town (exit 335), cross I-40 and turn left onto Tucumcari Blvd. West of the city, follow signs for I-40 and join I-40 at exit 329. Larger vehicles continue till exit 311 (Montoya), smaller vehicles exit at exit 321 (Palomas). Cross I-40 to the south and turn right onto the frontage road. Follow the frontage road through the tunnel under I-40 and turn west to Montoya on the north frontage road.
Montoya
Cross to the south frontage road. After 5 miles, the road passes I-40 and the road parallels the railroad through Newkirk. Follow the road parallel to the railroad tracks.
Cuervo
Rejoin I-40 (exit 291), exiting at exit 277 (Santa Rosa). Turn right at the exit stop sign and follow the boulevard westward into town.
Santa Rosa

Cross the Pecos River and bear right at the junction with US-54. Pass under the railroad and continue towards exit 273 of I-40. Take the I-40 westbound to exit 256.
A very early alignment (prior to 1937) of Route 66 went north from Santa Rosa to pass through the state capitol . . . and one of the oldest cities in North America . . . Santa Fe, NM. It is a beautiful city and the central business district (on the square at the Governor's Palace) will give you a feel for the early squares of Old Mexico.
Santa Fe has a significant "arts" community, including an internationally recognized opera company that performs in the summer months.

The Wheelwright Museum has Native American pottery exhibited. Also the International Folk Art Museum is nearby. Admission is either nominal or by donation. Downtown is the "oldest" dwelling in the US, from the early 1600s.
