Books
Two Wheels on Two Reels Mike Seate, Matthew J. Gagnon
The first book ever to explore biker movies, Two Wheels on Two Reels describes how these films formed our first impressions of bikers, influenced our culture, and brought big-screen entertainment to a new level. Whether serious, funny, shocking, historical, or just plain weird, biker movies created a permanent place in our modern culture and our lives, shaping, reflecting, and sometimes spoofing the biker lifestyle.
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance Robert M. Pirsig
A seminal work that defines so much. The author and his son travel cross country on a motorcycle and write about motorcycle maintenance (of course!), relationships, life, each other Zen and a LOT of other stuff. The old saw is that if I have to explain motorcycle touring to you - you won't understand. Pirsig explains it so well, EVERYONE can understand.
Motorcycle Guide to Route 66
....HHJM, Inc.
What can I say. This link WON'T take you out to Amazon.com. It's OUR book, of which we are very proud, but guard VERY closely. Amazon doesn't have it in stock . . . actually, nobody has it in stock 'ecept us and our valued purchasers. We have poured so much blood, sweat and tears into it we can't stand the idea of someone putting it on sale at some frantic discount 'to clear it out' or it being delivered to a customer in anything less than perfect condition (we shrink wrap every copy right after it is bound).
Honda:The Early Classic Motorcycles . . . Roy Bacon
All the singles, twins and fours, including production racers and the Gold Wing (1947-1977).
'Family Style Restaurants are much favored by motorcyclists and this book focuses on the type of place where the person at the cash register probably owns the place. The title says it all.
Where the Locals Eat: A Guide to the Best Restaurants in America . . . Editors of Magellan Press
Put this book and 'Eat Your Way Across the USA' in your tank bag and you will have a real 'insiders' guide to great eating on your next tour.
National Geographic's Guide to the National Parks of the United States . . . Elizabeth Newhouse
Our National Parks present super values for the touring motorcyclist . . . as they should. Geographic's stunning photography is probably reason enough to buy the book. You also get the information in a compact sized book.
Sparring With Charlie:Motorcycling Down the Ho Chi Minh Trail . . . Christopher Hunt
Hard o find a more exotic trip than this. Tons of emotion when you say 'Ho Chi Minh Trail,' and Chris ran into them all on his trip. Chris says he encountered no Ugly American emotions and met some terrific people - language barrier not withstanding.
Classic Motorcycles. . . Mark Gardiner
Published in November, 1997, this is one of the newest overviews of the bikes that have taken a place in motorcycling history. You will enjoy this trip down memory lane.
Moto Guzzi Buyer's Guide . . .Mick Walker
The Goose doesn't get the respect it deserves. See them all here.
America's Best Harley-Davidson Customs Timothy Remus
Can you REALLY put $100,000 into a Hog? Sure. That and more. Read all about it here
Triumph Motorcycles Buyer's Guide . . . Roy Bacon
Is it just my imagination or is Triumph staging a major recovery in the U.S. market? You can see 'em from 1945 to the present in this Guide.
Arlen Ness: Master Customizer Timothy Remus
And this is the man who has done so much of that magic on Hogs. Read about the man and his masterful work on bikes most of us just dream about.
BMW Motorcycles: The Complete Story . . Bruce Preston
Air Head, Oil Head, the entire BMW line is here. Learn about the motorcycle manufacturer that DOES march to the beat of a different drum.
MSF Guide to Motorcycling Excellence . . MSF Staff
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation really does a superior job of pulling together the skills, knowledge and strategies for riding safe. Their slogan: The More You Know the Better it Gets, really says it all.
Kawasaki: Color Classics . . .Mick Walter
Looking at pretty pictures of motorcycles ranks right up there with riding them. These are great.
The people who do it in the dirt wouldn't have it any other way. They usually say they don't ride on the street because the street is too dangerous!
Motocross and Off-Road Performance Handbook . . .Eric Gott
Eric has pulled together the essentials of this important segment of two wheel riding.
Another in Mick's series on classic motorcycles. A fun read.
The Honda Gold Wing . . Malcolm Birtitt
The 'Wing defined and defines the large touring motorcycle. This book - one in the Osprey Classic Motorcycles series - tells the story from drawings to the present day. Quite a story about quite a bike.
Route 66: The Mother Road ....Mike Wallis
Another Mike Wallis work product. Mike and his wife are widely known along Route 66 and have produced a number of worthwhile resources.
The Route 66 Cookbook, Marian Clark
Marian actually drove Historic Route 66 and stopped at the mom and pop cafes along the Route. She painstakingly gathered their recipes and gathered them all together in this impressive hardcover book.
Route 66 Remembered, Michael Karl Witzel
This is one of the newest books on Route 66, published in the Spring of 1996. More a personal story than travel book. Neat.
Route 66:The Highway and Its People, Quinta Scott, Croce Kelly
Route 66's funny, pretty, sad, glad, old, new has never been more beautifully photographed. Now it is in paperback which means you probably won't have it on your coffee table, but you'll enjoy the pictures none the less.
Since Route 66 was de-certified in the 80's it has ceased to exist as far as the Federal Highway System is concerned. That means that whole segments are disappearing. Teague gives insights into finding original segments of the storied road.
Route 66 Across New Mexico: A Wanderer's Guide Jill Schneider
The University of New Mexico published this paperback. Jill writes lovingly about Route 66's meanderings through the Land of Enchantment. From Tucumcari in the east to Gallup in the west, you'll enjoy having these insights into the state and Route 66.
A Guide Book to Highway 66, Jack Rittenhouse
The University of New Mexico published - actually re-published - this pocket size paperback. It is one of the earliest guidebooks, originally published shortly after the highway opened. All subsequent authors are indebted to Jack as they travel the route in more modern times.
The Route 66 Traveler's Guide and Roadside Companion, Tom Snyder
Tom is a key player in the California Route 66 Association (all 8 states the route passed through have such Associations). He has written knowingly and entertainingly about his favorite highway. The maps he includes are detailed and very helpful.
The Missouri U. S. 66 Tour Book, C. H. Curtis
Focusing on the state of Missouri alone allows the book to be VERY detailed. Certainly Missouri is one of the most scenic settings for Route 66. It - and Interstate 44 that largely replaced it - skirt the northern Ozarks making for a very scenic passage.
