Spring Has Sprung?

Well, maybe. We've had all the Winter we want here in Texas, but some of the fruit trees are in bloom. They often get frozen back, but we take them as proof that Winter won't last forever and we can think about some serious riding.

Statues on the Show Circuit

Pauline Hillhouse of Corsicana, TX (903-874-5457) was showing some interesting "biker specific" statuettes at swap shows in Texas. They are about five inches tall and nine inches long.

"Flying" Flies Route 66

The March, 1997 issue of Flying magazine features Route 66 on it's cover. Russell Munson flew a Super Cub over the route and captured on film many of the route's icons. Meramec Caverns, Cadillac Ranch and downtown Pontiac, IL from 1,000 feet up is an unusual perspective. Munson pointed out that Clover Field (now Santa Monica Municipal Airport) is where the famous DC-3 was born. The airport also houses a Museum of Flying. (My brother, Tom, sent me a copy of the magazine. An avid amateur pilot, Tom was last seen on two wheels aboard a Honda Helix)

Touring Food

My wife and I have recently discovered Clif Bars. These are natural energy bars that are healthier than candy bars and, because they have more calories than diet bars they'll satisfy longer. I ate a half dozen of them going and coming from Bike Week. Whole grains and fruit, they are moist and chewy endurance bars that are rich in simple carbohydrates for quick energy. Carbo-packing that tastes good. We've never found them in grocery stores and you have to check expiration dates closely if you buy at a health food store. I'll be glad to send you one to sample for $2.00. They're great when you have had enough Big Mac's.

"Money's" Hot Stuff

Money magazine (July 1997, page 174) says: "Thousands . . . in mid-life denial have found that today's motorcycles are the hottest way to go from zero to sixty (mph) as well as from 45 to 20 (in age). This year's top-of-the-line cruisers, such as the $17,000 Harley-Davidson FLSTS Heritage Springer Softail and the $14,500 Honda Valkyrie Tourer (which they pictured) boast retro styling from years past, plus more power and easier handling than ever."

The article went on to note that there are now more than 5,000 motorcycle clubs across the nation, up from just 200 about a decade ago. They also noted that Yamaha's Royal Star carriers a five-year warranty that includes free emergency towing 24 hours a day.

Ready to Roll

"I'm really going to miss her!" So Jim Thompson said when he signed up for The 3nd Annual Mother Road Ride/Rally®. Jim and his wife, June, make long trips on their Gold Wing, but this time Jim wants to take his new cruiser, Kawasaki's Vulcan 1500 Classic. He says "I'll send her a postcard."

Jim has been riding ten years and this will be the longest trip he has made on two wheels. He'll be back at his manager's job (Big A Auto Parts in Dixon) after the run.

Motorcycle Awareness Month

Movers and shakers in California will get together May 3rd, 10AM, at the City Hall in Victorville, CA to sign proclamations recognizing the contribution that motorcycles and their riders make to the state of California. All Brands and riders are invited and to enjoy the food and fellowship planned after the signings. Call Hank Hallmark @ 1-800-734-0571 for more details.
