Volume Three Number 9
Return to the Road
Chevrolet Motor Division of General Motors isgoing to besending the first 20 ofthe new Corvettesdown Historic Route66 early in September.
The spokesman I talked to July 25th said allCorvette owners are 'invited' to come along.Interested people should call the specialnumber: 1-800-336-6038. He also said theyweren't releasing the exact departure date 'atthis time.'
Hank Hallmark of Ontario, CA told me theonly 'acceptable' ways to 'do' Route 66were either on a motorcycle or in a Corvette.Looks like we've come full circle.
The 60's television series 'Route 66' starringMartin Milner and George Maharis focuseda lot of attention on Corvettes and Route 66.Nice to see that the interest remains.
Personal Diary
In late June I was able to complete my personal tour of the Chicago-Amarillo 'leg' ofRoute 66. I hope to do Amarillo-SantaMonica in late September or early October.I've posted some of my notes-pictures-impressions on the Internet. That Internet'address' is: http://www.hhjm.com/bikes.Just click on 'Motorcycle Publications' andthen the Pictorial Diary: Chicago-Amarillo.
Motorcycle Tour & Cruiser Article
There was real RUSH when I went to themailbox and got my September issue ofMotorcycle Tour & Cruiser (formerly Motorcycle Tour and Travel). They were kindenough to print an article I submitted on theKitsatchi National Forest in Louisiana.
I gathered material for the piece when I wentto Bike Week @ Daytona in March of thisyear. I plan on returning to Kitsatchi oneday. It is an easy, half day trip from here.
Largest Cross in the
Western Hemisphere
We're not certain how one would make the'largest' determination, but it is HUGE.None of the Route 66 'guides' include it yet(we'll include it in the 1998 Edition of Motorcycle Guide to Route 66) because it waserected in 1995 by a Pampa, TX ministry.
My picture doesn't really capture the enormous scale of the structure. The small figures at the base are life size. My bike isparked about 50 yards from the base. See itat Exit 112 from Interstate 40 at Groom,TX just east ofAmarillo.
Groom is alsohome to one ofmany defunct'motor courts.'It will give you agood feel for the type of accommodationsthat were available to Route 66 travelersduring the Route's heyday.
