Art Deco Delights

U-Drop-Inn (19k)

Picture courtesty of David Knudson, National Route 66 Association

The U-Drop-Inn in Shamrock, Texas is, arguably, the finest remaining example of Art Deco design and construction still in existance on Route 66. Its continued existance is by no means a given. The restaurant has been closed for several years and the rest of the building is vacant. In October, 2000 it was announced that the City of Shamrock had acquired the property and a carefully planned program of restoration was underway. The plan includes restoring neon lighting to the building

Preservation/Restoration efforts are reported but those face great obstacles without a commercially viable enterprise in place. Without a steady, dependable source of income properties such as this don't have a bright future.

Route 66 Diner (5k)
More promising by far is the Route 66 Diner on Central Avenue in Albuquerque, New Mexico. While it is new construction, the owners rebuilt in the art deco style - complete with neon and tile. They enjoy a brisk breakfast, coffee and lunch trade.
