In Like a Lion, Out Like a Lamb?
It certainly fits the registration process for The 4th Annual Mother Road Ride/Rally®! The registrations have been coming in fast and furious. We've always been concerned about the possible need to 'cap' registrations. This might be the year that we have to do that . . . at least at the Chicago start. It just isn't practical to attract and manage hundreds of bikes in the downtown area of the nation's third largest city. Chicago PD just hasn't been very encouraging about helping us manage the event. Old timers may recall that we got abruptly bumped from an original gathering point two years ago when a special event took place in Grant Park.
If you've been planning to run with us this
year and start in Chicago, I want to urge
you to get your registration in promptly.
Watch For Northbound Classics
Jeff LaFollette, who is chairman of the 1998
Motor Tour sponsored by the Route 66
Association of Illinois tells us that they will
be running north on Historic Route 66 this
year. Their tour starts in Edwardsville, IL
on June 12, 1998. Their annual Tour is a
favorite of classic car owners and there has
been a motorcycle or two (or more!) included
in their annual event. Learn full details by
calling Jeff at (319)893-6653.
Truly International
Malcolm Ewing was kind enough to send information about our Motorcycle Guide to Route 66 to Frank Barrett of The Sunday Mail (a United Kingdom - England - national daily news paper). Barrett wrote an article about our favorite highway noting that: 'Route 66 must be permanently jammed with Mail . . . judi ng by the numbers who have written in with dreamy reminiscences of great days on America's 'Mother Road.' He also included our fax number . . . it is 13 digits long when dialed from England.
A lot of overseas contacts come in via our 'Web sites:
http://www.hhjm.com/bikes
http://www.hhjm.com/rally
http://www.hhjm.com/66
and it is just amazing how much interest there is in Route 66 and our event outside the United States. Many credit that interest to re-runs of the 60's television series Route 66.
Don't be surprised if you hear some 'accents'
on The 4th Annual Mother Road Ride/Rally®.
World's Largest McDonalds
If you elect to travel the Interstate between Oklahoma City and the Missouri state line (Will Rogers Freeway) you'll pass under what is billed as the world's largest McDonalds. Largest in sense of square footage . . . although they do a ton of business, I believe the McDonalds in Moscow serves the most people.
This is the only place you can buy gas or use
a public restroom on the entire length of the
Will Rogers Freeway. It is there or exit the
freeway at one of the towns. The original
Route 66 in this part of Oklahoma is a more
interesting route to follow. It wends through
the towns and villages of Oklahoma and is
known as the "Free Road." If you are in a
hurry, Will Rogers Freeway is the one to
take. The speed limit is 75mph, so you can
eat up a lot of miles quickly.
Welcome the Winfield Winner
Scott Lindemann plans to 'join up' The 4th Annual Mother Road Ride/Rally® at Joplin, MO. He'll be riding his Honda Magna and told us: 'Love to ride and this is something to do . . . lots of people have bikes but never ride any place!' Welcome aboard, Scott.
