Hotline Goes 'On Line'
May 1, marked the start of our telephone Bulletin Board. Callers can listen to messages left by 'Mother Roaders' and they can leave messages as well. This is the first year for this addition to The Annual Mother Road Ride/Rally®. It was added in response to a suggestion received from a participant last year (Bruce Barthel). There is a similar forum where people can exchange information on the Internet at: http://www.hhjm.com/rally. We hope that these additions to the rally will make it easier for people to 'hook up' with fellow Route 66 cruisers along the Route.
Departure and Join Up information has
been mailed to everyone registered for The
4th Annual Mother Road Ride/Rally®. This
mailing details the locations and times for
departure in Los Angeles and Chicago as
well as giving the 'join up' locations. We
also included a listing of all registrants, their
planned starting city and their telephone
number. If you haven't received yours,
please call the office at 1-800-553-5883 and
leave a message.
Short Ride to Chicago Start
Ken and Carole Davenport don't have a long ride to the Chicago starting point . . . they call the Windy City home! The Davenports have been riding for six years and told us that 'It sounded like a great way to make a long trip possible . . . we're interested in '66 and want to follow the route.'
Ken is a church administrator and Carole
works as a corporate trainer. The 4th Annual
Mother Road Ride/Rally® will be their longest ride to date. (Ed Note: Ken and Carole
read The 4th Annual Mother Road
Ride/Rally® 's Newsletter 'on line' at our
Internet site - http://www.hhjm.com/rally)
The Kiwanis Park in Baxter Springs, KS is
one of those pleasant surprises along Historic
Route 66 . . . a free place to take a break.
Picnic benches, public restroom, drinking
fountain, etc. You probably have to have a
license to join the fisherman in our picture,
but dabbling your feet in river is at no
charge. When the Interstate opened up
between Joplin, MO and Oklahoma, the 13
miles of Route 66 in the state of Kansas were
lopped off. It remains an interesting few
miles through small farming and mining
communities that have a rich history and
interesting sights to see.
So Long Harley Cigarettes
Lorillard Tobacco pulled its Harley-Davidson
cigarettes off shelves last year and replaced
it with a brand called Maverick 'by the
makers of Harley-Davidson cigarettes.'
Lorillard sold Harley cigarettes in about 38
states and the brand was exported to foreign
countries. In the early 1990's HD began to
fear that Lorillard's ads would appeal to
minors and the motor company didn't want
to get drawn into tobacco litigation. They
sued each other over the deal and settled by
agreeing to Lorillard selling cigarettes under
the Harley name until September 2001.
Lorillard dropped the brand early and substituted Maverick cigarettes.
Pace Moves Up from Evel
Pace Entertainment Corp., a major producer
of Evel Knievel motorcycle stunts as well as
Monster Truck spectacles, etc., is moving
upscale to touring versions of Broadway
shows. And this year the system has worked
in reverse. Pace toured the show Jekyll &
Hyde for a year then took it to Broadway.
The critics were not enthused but the show is
a popular success and voila' Pace is a force
to reckon with on the Great White Way.
