Early Bird Registration Opens
January marks the opening of early bird registration for the annual run along Historic Route 66. We already have several registrations in hand for The 5th Annual Mother Road Ride/Rally®, June 12-19, 1999. If you think you can go, we urge you to get your registration in. If you have a change of plans, you can always get a full refund. Just return the registration materials, there is no cut off date for a refund and no extra charge for a passenger on the registered bike.
Kingman, AZ Guestbook
We're indebted to the Newsletter of the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona for a breakdown of people signing their guestbook at the Powerhouse Visitor Center in Kingman, AZ.
No surprise that California was at the top of the list, but Germany was in 2nd place! England came in third and Arizona was 4th. It's reports like that that help to give us all a feel for the world-wide interest in our favorite road.
1999 Edition Published
The new edition of Motorcycle Guide to Route 66 is hot off the press, in stock and available for immediate delivery. Of course we updated the motorcycle laws in the 8 states Route 66 passes through . . . with emphasis on the laws regarding wearing of helmets.
The page count is now at 152 (8½ by 11 inch pages) and there are many, many pictures from the Route. We've added pictures and coverage on Rolla, Missouri's recreation of the famous Stonehenge . . . a prehistoric solar observatory that works. It is one of the 'join up' points for The 5th Annual Mother Road Ride/Rally® and quite a sight. Motorcycle specific parking has been created at the site, so you know their heads are in the right place!
We've also added Soulsby's Station in Mt Olive, IL; LaPosada in Winslow, AZ; Erick, OK's Honey Festival and OK Honey Farm; Powerhouse visitor's center in Kingman, AZ; Cadillac Ranch's new location; the largest cross in the Western Hemisphere; statue of Saint Monica (in Santa Monica, CA) and a picture of that plaque on Ocean Blvd that marks the end of the road.
Add to that Dave Pouquette's Twisters in Williams, AZ; Joe Miller's journal and pictures from a June 1998 run down the road on two wheels and you practically have a brand new book. You can order the book by calling 1-800-553-5883 (817-488-4940 outside the United States), on the Internet at www.hhjm.com/rally/products.htm. It sells for $19.95 plus $4.00 s&h.
Corvettes & Route 66
It was Hank Hallmark who first told me that a motorcycle or a Corvette were the only 'right' ways to 'do Route 66. Last June the Chicago starters were treated to a parade of Corvettes - new and old - in Illinois. Happily, we'll get another opportunity on The 5th Annual Mother Road Ride/Rally® (June 12-19, 1999). The Route 66 Raceway Corvette Show is set for June 10-13, 1999 in Joliet, IL. Not good for the California starters, but a real treat for Corvette fans leaving from Chicago - or join up points within a day or two of Joliet. More info is available at 815-722-VETT or e-mail: acs@corvetteshow.com.
Obscure Oasis
Riding Route 66 means discoveries you make
along the way. Such is Fink Park in
Edmond,
OK. South
side of the
highway,
right at their
school, it
was created
by the wife
of Edmond's pioneer- Mayor, G. H. Fink.
It is a pleasant stop along the Mother Road.
