Cool!
At last! A cool front made it through here a week ago . . . the high temperatures have moderated down to positively chilly 80's. That ushers in some of the best riding of the year in this part of the country and you sure see a lot more bikes out.
Important 'Do' in Amarillo, Texas
Our hat is off to David Knudson and the
National Route 66 Federation. In addition to
playing an
important
role in working toward
national legislation to preserve our favorite highway, they
brought together Route 66 fans in Amarillo,
TX for the first Route 66 Expo. We co-ordinated the location filming for Ride Route
66-Texas (our newest Route 66 video for the
touring motorcyclist) with the Expo and were
delighted to meet David and other Route 66
fans.
Hackberry To Remain Open
Good news indeed from Bob Waldmire at the
Old Route 66 Visitor Center in Hackberry,
AZ. Bob advises that John & Kerry Pritchard of Tacoma, Washington are purchasing
it and plan to move to the property December 1st, 1998. They will add some real gems:
Their 1957 Corvette, some old gas pumps
and signs, old coke machines and a Wurlitzer.
Bob will be in Illinois writing his father's biography and then moving to Southeastern Arizona. The Waldmires have been connected to Route 66 for generations. Bob spent five years building the Hackberry center and his family has operated the Cozy Dog in Springfield, IL since the 1930's.
Bikes at the Fair
Taylor Ford brought his motorcycle museum
to the Texas State Fair. He told us he had
outstanding
attendance.
Certainly the
bikes he had
there were
classics. Taylor graciously
allowed us to photograph a few.
Electric Bike
Bikes and cars powered by electricity usually
generate some news stories as they emerge
from the drawing board but have remained
largely curiosities. We understand that
battery technology is the
major obstacle. The
Lectra V24
has a top
speed of
45mph and a
range of 35 miles before recharging. Not yet
ready for The 5th Annual Mother Road
Ride/Rally® but a nice looking bike. Lectra
has broken some new ground in generating
electricity during the braking process to
stretch riding time. Retails for $3,995.
